Carol Jean Vorderman OBE (born 24 December 1960) is a Welsh broadcaster, media personality, and writer. She is best known for her work on the Channel 4 game show Countdown, which she presented from 1982 to 2008. Early life and education
Vorderman was born in Prestatyn, North Wales, to Tony Vorderman, a businessman, and Edwina Vorderman, a teacher. She has two older brothers, Trixie and Anton. She attended Ysgol Glan Clwyd and then Shrewsbury School, where she was a boarder. She later studied mathematics at Newnham College, Cambridge, where she graduated with a first-class degree.
Career
Vorderman’s career began in television in 1982 when she joined the Channel 4 game show Countdown as the numbers whiz, checking the number solutions from the contestants and providing the correct ones if they weren’t spotted. She quickly became a popular figure on the show and was promoted to co-host alongside Richard Whiteley in 1989. She remained co-host of Countdown until its 2008 cancellation, making her the longest-serving presenter of a Channel 4 show.
